Who is Saint Patrick and why is he celebrated?
Saint Patrick lived in the fifth century and was born in Britain but kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave when he was 16.
He escaped and returned to Ireland to teach people about Christianity.
One of the big symbols of St. Patrick’s Day is the green Irish clover or shamrock.
According to legends Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity of father, son and holy spirit with the three leaves on the shamrock.
Irish immigrants later brought their traditions to the United States.
You can see parades everywhere around the world for St. Patrick’s Day and people wearing all green.
Many people also decorate their house with leprechauns, shamrocks and rainbows.
Why do people wear green on St. Patrick’s day?
Wearing green will make you invisible to leprechauns and if you don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day you’re going to get pinched by one.
Some people will also dress up as a leprechaun.
Leprechauns are a typical symbol for Ireland and are always portrait as grumpy little people with a red beard and green hat.
Legends say that leprechauns hide their pots of gold at the end of a rainbow and if you find it you will be very lucky.
